Backstage With... Maureen Kerrigan

Q. Maureen, how did you come to join the DCCN?

A. I was aware of the Cabaret Network for years, but I joined with a passion three years ago after walking into an open mic and reuniting with Terri Allen who insisted, on the spot, that I take the Yale Cabaret Conference  and apply for a spot in the DCCN Members Showcase. That did it; I was on my new path and I'm delighted with my new-found vocation and beautifully gifted Cabaret community.

Q.  How do you find songs that are right for you?

A. I choose songs that speak to me. I love telling stories with the pieces I select. Certain artists catch my eye on YouTube (i.e. Shirley Bassey, Ute Lemper, Lena Horne) and I often lift their energy and phrasing and put them into my performance. My teachers — Faith Prince, Amanda McBroom and Sally Mayes — have been my inspiration. And, I would like to add that Michael Miyazaki has mentored me in selecting unique tunes that always work nicely

Q. Where will we see and hear you next?

A. I am appearing in the spring show of Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center (Mondays at 8:00 and Tuesdays-Thursdays at 5pm), and in the upcoming DCCN Member Showcase at the Arts Club of Washington on April 12 at 7pm.
